Biogas Technology Can Help Reduce Indoor Pollution in Indian Households

Environmental pollution is not just confined to outdoor pollution. More often than not, we forget about indoor pollution which is one of the biggest causes of deadly diseases and deaths across the globe. Did you know that about 2.8 billion people across the globe still rely on dirty fuel out of which about 700 million (which makes for about 25 percent of the entire world) are from India? Statistics say it all and there were about 3.8 million premature deaths due to indoor pollution in the year 2016 alone.

Among these 3.8 million deaths, about 27 percent are attributable to pneumonia while 18 percent to stroke, 8 percent to lung cancer, 27 percent to ischaemic heart disease and 20 percent to COPD. 1.3 million out of these 3.8 million deaths were in India. Poorly ventilated dwellings in village households are one of the major reasons that smoke can be 100 times higher than acceptable levels clearly explaining why the death toll keeps increasing due to dirty fuel.

Biogas upgradation plant have got a lot of encouragement in recent years as setting up biogas plants in India is a great way to curb indoor pollution by a significant margin. As of now only 0.4 percent households use biogas and companies offering biogas to bio cng plants believe that general education and awareness can help increase the adoption of biogas in Indian households.
